Alabaster is the softest stone we have. It is hardness of 2-2.5 and is composed of gypsum which chemically is calcium sulphate. It can be carved with wood chisels and shaped with rasps. Stone chisels are a little faster though. It can also be turned on a lathe. Some are translucent and some are opaque. They are colorful and make great indoor sculptures.
Limestone is “uncompressed” marble: calcium carbonate that has become a sediment. It has a hardness of about 2 which varies greatly (the Tuxedo is much harder). We are in Kansas which is limestone country with Cottonwood as one of our best. We also have Silverdale (more yellow), Indiana (gray) and some Texas colors.
These are just a few of the alabasters and limestones in stock.
